Hollow Forms can be described as a vase type turning, usually with a small opening at the top. The look of a hollow form can vary as much as the wood turner's imagination can see. The piece can be solid looking or have many voids in it, making it look very artistic. Bowls can be used around the home for meal time or to hold your favorite snack. These types of bowls are, more often than not, thicker and larger than an artistic bowl placed on a shelf as decoration. Spindle Turning is taking long square stock and making it round. Such turnings can be rocking chair back inserts, bed posts, porch columns etc. Turning Wood can be a very addictive hobby, but one with many benefits. Giving wood bowls, hollow forms or any kind of wood turned art as a gift is going to be very much appreciated by the recipient. With desire, practice, and patience, you can have your own wood turning fine art gallery online and sell your work as an income supplement or you might just make a living at it. Every time you turn wood, you’re making an original fine art turning.
Usable Woodturnings: Woodturning Art that can be used is a two fold benefit. When it is not being used as a utilitarian piece, it doubles as a center piece.
Wood Bowls: Bowls make a great gift for yourself or a friend. The bowls I make can be used for everyday food use or just for art. They are easy to take care of and will last for years with proper and easy care.
Vases/Hollow Forms: Vases can vary in look and size dramatically. Some can be used for flower arrangements and some for the pure artistic look they show. A wood turned vase can be placed anywhere in your home or office and look wonderfu
Eccentric Turning - turning a single piece multiple times, upon different axes each time. Possibilities are endless and each year, new tools are introduced to help the turner reach farther to achieve new and more wonderful designs.
Segmented Turning - is a method of woodturning where the wood blank is constructed from many individual pieces of wood (segments) which are glued together before being turned. Many interesting patterns can be generated through the process of gluing and shaping on the lathe. Some segmented turnings can be made of thousands of pre cut pieces making spactacular turnings.
Turning Green Wood- just means the turner started with a fresh cut chunk of wood and completed the turning from start to finish without letting the wood dry or cure during the process. Green wood has a wonderful tendency to move or distort it's shape as it drys making very interesting designs itself. Not turning green wood thin enough by the final cuts will result in the wood cracking rather than distorting.
Natural Edge Turning - pieces which include the outside of the tree trunk or limb as the edge of the piece. Most often artistic turnings, usually bowls or hollow vessels, and usually green turned to final dimension. May include the bark or not, but pieces with bark should not have any bark damaged or missing. This form has a natural or organic look and feel to it.
There are other types of Woodturning but the above mentioned are the most common.
